BromptonBrompton is, ecclesiastically, in the diocese of Rochester, in the archdeaconry of archdeaconry of Rochester and rural deanery of Rochester. The parish church is named Holy Trinity with registers commencing in 1848. The garrison church is named St. Barbara with registers commencing in 1854. Brompton, a town and two chapelries in Chatham and Gillingham parishes, Kent. The town consists of two parts, New and Old; the former, adjacent to the London and Dover railway; the latter on the brow of a hill, overlooking the Medway, 1 mile northeast of Chatham, with a post-office with money order office and savings bank, under Chatham. Brompton is in the parliamentary borough of Chatham, union of Medway, hundred of Chatham and Gillingham, lathe of Aylesford, and in the Western division of Kent. A grand naval hospital, barracks for the Royal marines light infantry (1778) 2, barracks and hospital for the infantry of the line, and barracks, with stables, for the Royal Engineers from 1812 onwards are here, all within the extensive fortifications which defend the dockyard and gun-wharf of Chatham. The barracks include a museum, containing models and relics. A large military gymnasium was erected in 1863, at a cost of upwards of £6,000. The new convict prison is here; and, at the census of 1861, had 1,269 inmates. The barracks of the Royal Engineers today includes the Royal Engineers Museum. A fair is held on 22 May. The chapelries are Old Brompton and New Brompton. Population of Old Brompton in 1861 8,119 and of New Brompton, 4,400. The livings are vicarages in the diocese of Rochester. Value of Old Brompton, £150 with habitable glebe house and value of New Brompton, £166. Old Brompton church is a neat edifice in the pointed style, with a spire and is named Holy Trinity. New Brompton church was built in 1866, at a cost of £5,800; and is in the early decorated style. The garrison church Brompton St. Barbara, built in 1854, was undedicated until 2002. Prior to 2002 it was simply known as the Garrison Church. St. Barbara is the patron saint of artillerymen and engineers. The church is located in Maxwell Road, Gillingham. It is the Corps Church of the Royal Engineers (RE) but serves other service units in the nearby Army Barracks and the Royal School of Military Engineering. Contained within the church is the Naval Memorial Chapel. The entries in the naval rolls of honour kept in the chapel relate to the inscriptions on the Royal Navy Chatham Division memorial on the Great Lines in Gillingham. Printed copies of the rolls of honour are available in the local studies collections at the Medway Record Office. Contact local.studies@medway.gov.uk for further information. There are chapels for Wesleyans and Roman Catholics. 1 For further more detailed information about Brompton please go to the Medway file and Brompton History. 1 John Marius Wilson, comp.
