      In the name of God Amen, I Thomas Denne of Lydd in the County of Kent, Grazier, being ill in body but of sound mind, memory, and understanding God be praised, do make and ordain my Last Will and Testament in writing in manner following (that is to say)

      First I desire that my body may be decently buried at the discretion of my Wife and my executors herein after named. And I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife ELIZABETH, the full and clear sum of fifty pounds of lawful money of Great Britain yearly and every year for and during the term of her natural life over and above what was settled upon her by me previous to our marriage. And I do direct the said annuity or clear yearly sum of fifty pounds to be paid unto her by my four sons and Executors herein after named in equal shares and portions by four equal quarterly payments immediately from and after my decease.

      I give and bequeath unto my daughter SARAH the wife of John Porker of London, Banker, one thousand pounds to be paid to her by my Executors, within six months next after my decease.

      Also I give and bequeath to THOMAS RUCK, son of my late daughter Elizabeth Ruck, deceased, the sum of five hundred pounds to be paid unto him by my said Executors when and as soon as he attains the age of one and twenty years.

      Also, I give and devise unto my four sons JOHN DENNE, RICHARD DENNE, DAVID DENNE, and WILLIAM DENNE all and singular my Messuages, Lands, Tenements, Hereditaments, and Real Estate and Premises whatsoever and wheresoever, To hold the said Messuages, Lands, Tenements, Hereditaments, and Real Estate and Premises with the Appurtenances unto and to the use of the said John Denne, Richard Denne, David Denne and William Denne, their several and respective heirs and assigns forever to take as Tenants in Common and not as joint Tenants.

      And also as to for and concerning my ready money, securities for money, stock, cattle, goods, chattels, effects, and personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever of what sort or kind the same be I give and bequeath the same and every part thereof from and after payment of my just debts, funeral expences and the several legacies herein before mentioned unto my four sons JOHN, RICHARD, DAVID and WILLIAM DENNE equally to be divided between them share and share alike, and to their several and respective Executors and Administrators absolutely forever.

      And I do make constitute and appoint the said JOHN DENNE, RICHARD DENNE, DAVID DENNE and WILLIAM DENNE to be Executors of this my Will and do also appoint my two friends GEORGE MORRISON of Lydd, Officer of his Majesty’s Customs, and JOHN SHOOSMITH of the same place, Grazier, Guardians and Trustees to such of my said four sons as shall be under the age of one and twenty years at the time of my decease for and during their respective minorities with full power over their persons and states

      and hereby revoking and making void all former and other Wills by me made do declare this to be my last Will and Testament.

      In witness whereof I the said THOMAS DENNE have hereunto set my hand and seal this second day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy three.

      MY DESIRE IS that the five hundred pounds as mentioned in my Will given to THO[MA]S RUCK be equally divided betwixt my WIFE and our daughter SARAH PORKER for their sole use and benefit.

      APPEARED PERSONALLY MR. JOHN SHOOSMITH of Lydd, Gent. and MR. GEORGE MORRISON of Lydd aforesaid Custom House Officer and being sworn upon the Holy Evangelists to depose the truth made Oath as follows; That they knew and were well acquainted with THOMAS DENNE late of Lydd in the County of Kent deceased and with his manner and character of hand writing and subscription having seen him write and subscribe his hand and now viewing and carefully perusing the paper writing hereunto annexed purporting to be and contain a Codicil or addition to the Last Will and Testament of the said deceased beginning "My Desire is that the five hundred pounds" ending "for their sole use and benefit." and thus subscribed "Thos. Denne" they these Deponents do severally say that they verily and in their consciences believe the whole series and contents of the said Codicil and the name thereto subscribed to be all of the proper hand writing of the said deceased.

      The said MR JOHN SHOOSMITH and MR. GEORGE MORRISON were duly sworn to the truth of this Affidavit before me J. Goodwin, Commissioner.

      THIS WILL was proved at London with a Codicil the twenty first day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy eight Before the Right Worshipful Sir George Hay, Knight, Doctor of Laws, Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the oaths of RICHARD DENNE, JOHN DENNE, DAVID DENNE and WILLIAM DENNE the sons of the deceased and Executors named in the said Will to whom administration was granted of [all] and singular the goods, chattels, and credits of the said deceased, having been first sworn duly to administer that is to say the said RICHARD DENNE before the Worshipful William Compton Doctor of Laws and Surrogate of the said Commissary and the said JOHN DENNE, DAVID DENNE and WILLIAM DENNE by commission.
