IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, the 19 day of October in the year of our Lord God a thousand, five hundred, fifty and eight (1558), I, GEORGE CARTER, the elder of Crundale, in the County of Kent, husbandman, being sick in body but of good and perfect remembrance thanks be given to God, ordain and make this my present Testament and last Will in manner and form following,
First, I bequeath my soul to Almighty God my maker and redeemer, to our blessed Lady Saint Mary and to all the holy company of Heaven and my body to be buried in the churchyard of Crundale aforesaid.
Item, I bequeath to the high alter there for my tithes and oblations negligently forgotten 3 shillings, 4 pence.
Item, I will to be bestowed at my burial to priests and Clerks and poor people to pray for my soul and all expen? souls twenty shillings.
Item, I will to be bestowed at my months’ day 26 shillings 8 pence.
Item, at my twelve months’ mind 20 shillings.
Item, I will that IZABELL CARTER, my wife, shall have the parlour in my mansion house and one cow’s pasture so long as she is widow and will here abide.
Item, I give and bequeath unto the said IZABELL the featherbed and the bolster which her mother mother gave unto her, two blankets, two pair of sheets, two pillows and the third best coverlet and the best white hanging bed in the parlour as it standeth for the time that she dwelleth here. And also the profits of five apple trees standing and growing in Legatts orchard which I have reserved to myself and the profits of the walnut tree next unto the hay barn in the further close.
Item, I give and bequeath unto the said IZABELL, my wife, twenty nobles of household stuff to be [ap]praised by four indifferent men and if she desire any more then she shall pay for it according as it is [ap]praised.
Item, I will that IZABELL, my wife, shall have two parts of all my woolen and linen made and unmade and uncut whereof part thereof to be divided among my children according to her discretion and the third part thereof I will and bequeath to GEORGE CARTER, my son.
Item, I bequeath to JULYAN CARTER, my daughter 20 pounds in pence and penny worthies to be paid unto her at the day of her marriage and if she marry not and live, then I will she shall have my foresaid bequest when she cometh to the age of 26 years.
Item, I bequeath unto ALICE CARTER, my daughter 13 pounds, 6 shillings 8 pence in pence and penny worthies to be paid unto her at the day of her marriage and if she marry not and live then I will she shall have the said 13 pounds, 6 shillings 8 pence when she cometh to the age of 26 years.
Item, I bequeath unto JOHAN CARTER, my daughter, 13 pounds, 6 shillings 8 pence in pence and penny worthies to be paid to her at the day of her marriage.
Item, I bequeath to JOHN CARTER, the younger, my son, 10 pounds of lawful money of England to be paid to him when he cometh to the age of 24 years.
Item, I bequeath to GEORGE SMETH, my godson, the son of William Smethe, 6 lambs.
Item, I bequeath to THOMAS RUCKE, my godson, the son of WILLIAM RUCKE, 6 lambs.
Item, I bequeath to GEORGE HALL, my godson, the son of George Hall, 4 lambes.
The residue of all my moveable goods, first my debts and legacies truly contented and paid, I give and bequeath to GEORGE CARTER, my son, whom I ordain and make my trusty Executor to perform and fulfill this my last Will and Testament. And I ordain and make JOHN CARTER, the elder, my son, the overseer of the same and I give and bequeath to him for his labour 20 pounds of lawful money of England to be paid to him within two years next after my decease whereof he shall pay toward the setting up of the frame in Denwood Street 10 pounds.
Item, I bequeath to MATHEW COURT, my wife’s son, 3 pounds 6 shillings 8 pence in pence and penny worthies to be paid to him at the feast of St. Michael the Archangel next coming.
THIS IS THE LAST WILL OF ME, the said GEORGE CARTER, made and declared the day and year above written as concerning my lands and tenements.
First, I will that GEORGE CARTER, my son, shall have immediately after my decease my mansion house that I dwell in and all my lands and tenements with their appurtenances set, lying and being in the parishes of Crundale and Godmersham except one tenement and three pieces of land set, lying and being in and by Denwood Street in the foresaid parish of Crundale to be for and to the said GEORGE and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten. And for lack of heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, I will the said mansion house and all other the premises to him willed to JOHN CARTER, the elder, my son, and to the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten. And for lack of heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, I will the said mansion house and all other the premises to RICHARD CARTER, my son, and to the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, and for lack of heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, I will the said mansion house and all other the premises to JOHN CARTER, the younger, my son, to be had to him, his heirs and assigns forever. And I will to the said GEORGE CARTER, my son, one piece of land called Hoodys with the appurtenances lying and being in the parish of Brabourne to be had to him, his heirs and assigns forever.
Item, will to JOHN CARTER, the elder, my son, my tenements and lands with the appurtenances set, lying and being in the parish of Chilham to be had to him, his heirs and assigns forever. And also I will to the said JOHN 18 acres of marsh land lying and being together in Wallamb Marsh in the parishes of Wye Church and Saint Martens to be had to the said JOHN and to the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten and for lack of heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, I will the said 18 acres of marsh land to GEORGE CARTER, my son, to be had to him, his heirs and assigns forever.
Item, I will to JOHN CARTER, the younger, my son, my tenements and three pieces of land with the appurtenances set, lying and being in and by Denwood Street in the foresaid parish of Crundale to be had to him, his heirs and assigns forever.
Item, I will to RICHARD CARTER, my son, my tenements and lands in Cheriton which I have purchased of JOHN CHAPMAN to be had to him, his heirs and assigns forever. And if the said RICHARD do refuse to take the said tenements and lands then I will that GEORGE CARTER, my son, shall have the same to him, his heirs and assigns forever and the said GEORGE shall pay to the said RICHARD, his brother, twenty pounds of lawful money of England within twelve months next after my decease.
Witnesses at the making and declaring of this Will and Testament: John Weston, George Halle, William Smethe, Thomas Hammond and Thomas Tylman.
