A namesake:
FUNERAL AT WYE, KENT
Mr Valentine Austen, who died at Wye in Kent on Saturday August 21st, 1795, was buried on the Wednesday following. He had given very particular directions in his will with regard to his funeral, which were carefully attended to, and the singularities of it conducted in such a manner as to form a scene equally solemn and affecting. Between twelve and one o'clock, the procession set out from his house, and went that way which leads through the High Street up to the church. The bells were carefully muffled and rang a dumb peal.
The procession was preceded by two women who were formerly his hop-tyers, strewing old hops. The band, consisting of two French horns, two bassoons, two fifes, two hautboys, two violins and a long drum, played a solemn dirge all the way to the church gate. In the church (between the psalms and the Lesson) the 104th psalm was played and sung; and from the Church to the grave, the dirge was repeated. The concourse of people was astonishingly great and they behaved with order and attention, during the whole of the ceremony. Mr Austen was ever good to the poor in his life and he remembered them at his death. He ordered to the poor hop-strewers half a guinea apiece; to every poor man resident in the parish, a quart of beer and a twopenny loaf; and to every poor child, half the quantity of bread and beer. He also left £50 to the Sunday School of Wye. This eccentric man, some years before his death, had his coffin made in readiness for that event.

Will of Valentine Austen, of Wye, 24 March 1650/51, Maltster
IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I, VALENTINE AUSTEN, of Wye, in the County of Kent, Maltster, being weak and infirm in body but of good and perfect memory, praised be God therefore, do the four and twentieth [24th] day of March Anno Domini one thousand six hundred and fifty [1650/51] make, ordain and declare this my last Will and Testament in writing for the disposing of such goods, chattels and lands and tenements and hereditaments as it hath pleased the Lord God to bestow upon me after this manner following, revoking hereby both in deed and law all other former Wills and Testaments heretofore by me made,
First, I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God my faithful Creator and Redeemer and my body to be decently interred by the discretion of my Executor hereafter named and ELIZABETH, my dear and wellbeloved wife,
Item, I make and appoint my loving son, MATTHEW AUSTEN, of Wye aforesaid, maltster, my sole Executor.
Item I give unto my sons, VALENTINE, THOMAS, EDMUND, RICHARD, HENRY, WILLIAM and JOHN AUSTEN, the full sum of three score pounds [£60] a piece of lawful money of England to be paid unto them and every of them by my said Executor at their several ages of one and twenty years [21] and likewise unto my daughter, ELIZABETH AUSTEN, the like sum of three score pounds [£60] of lawful money of England to be paid unto her at twenty [20] years of age or at the day of marriage which shall first happen.
And my mind further is that if any of my said sons shall happen to die and depart this natural life before they shall attain unto the said age of one and twenty [21] years that then his or their portion or portions shall be equally divided amongst my sons that are then living.
And I will that if any of my said sons do happen to decease not having issue of their bodies that then the portion and sum given to him or them as above said shall return and be equally divided amongst the rest of my sons that are then living.
And my mind is that if my said daughter, ELIZABETH, do die without issue or before she shall complete the age of twenty [20] years that then her portion shall be equally divided amongst my said sons then living.
And I will that if my said beloved wife do keep herself a widow then she shall for long as she remain a widow have her dwelling in my said dwelling house situate in the parish of Wye above said and shall have the use of my said children’s portions paid unto her by my said Executor to bring up my said children.
And my mind is that if my said loving wife do marry that then my said Executor shall pay her the use of seven score pounds [£140] during the term of her life and she to have the said house solely to my said Executor and I will that all my household stuff after it is praised to be equally divided amongst all my said children and as they come to age severally to receive their several portions of the said household stuff.
And my mind is that if my said Executor do happen to die not having issue of his body lawfully begotten that then the next heir shall be my Executor of this my last Will and Testament.
And all the rest of my goods, cattle, lands, tenements and hereditaments (my debts, legacies and all other my expenses being paid and discharged) shall remain and continue to my said Executor and his heirs forever.
And this I publish to be my last Will and Testament and have hereunto set my hand and seal
