      In memory of Richard Ruck, who died June 19 1760 aged 25 years also Susanna his wife who died Feb 21, 1814, aged 81 years, likewise three children of John and Elizabeth Ruck who died in their infancy lso the above Elizabeth Ruck died Nov 3 1816 aged 57 years, also Edwin son of the above Elizabeth Ruck died April 7 1818 aged 17 years also Harriott their daughter died October 6 1818 aged 22 years. The grass withereth the flower fadeth, but the word of our God shall stand forever. Also Elizabeth their daughter Dec 15, 1821 aged 27 years. Blessed aaae the dead which die in the Lord. Also the above John Ruck died June 8 1822 aged 62 years. Also George their son died July 5, 1823 aged 32 years. Also Frederic their son died Feb 3, 1826 aged 22 years. Also William Henry their son died Dec 27 1832, aged 27.

      Will of John Ruck, of Maidstone, 6 April 1822


      THIS IS THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT of me, JOHN RUCK, of Maidstone, in the County of Kent, bricklayer and chinaman, which I make, publish and declare in manner and form following, (that is to say);

      I nominate, constitute and appoint my sons, GEORGE RUCK, of Maidstone aforesaid, bricklayer, and JAMES RUCK, of the same place, cordwainer, and my friend, JOHN VINE HALL, of Maidstone aforesaid, stationer, joint Executors of this my Will and I will, order and direct that they well and truly pay, satisfy and discharge all and every my just debts, funeral expenses, the costs of proving this my Will and incidental charges with all convenient speed next after my decease.

      And as to such worldly estate wherewith has pleased God to bless me, I give and dispose thereof as follows, (that is to say);

      I give and bequeath unto my brother, RICHARD RUCK, the sum of twenty pounds [£20] to and for his own use and benefit

      And I give, devise and bequeath unto my said Executors, GEORGE RUCK, JAMES RUCK and JOHN VINE HALL, all and every my messuages, lands, tenements, hereditaments and real estate whatsoever and wheresoever situate lying and being in the parish of Maidstone aforesaid or elsewhere, with their and every of their rights, members and appurtenances and all and every my monies and securities for money, stock in trade, book debts, household furniture, plate, linen, china, effects and personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever and of what nature, kind or quality soever to hold unto and to the use of them, the said GEORGE RUCK, JAMES RUCK and JOHN VINE HALL, their heirs, Executors, Administrators and assigns for ever according to the natures of the same estates respectively, but nevertheless upon the trusts and to and for the ends, intents and purposes of this my Will hereinafter mentioned, expressed and declared of concerning the same, (that is to say);

      Upon trust that they, my said Trustees, GEORGE RUCK, JAMES RUCK and JOHN VINE HALL, or the survivors or survivor of them, his Executors or Administrators do and shall manage and carry on the said trades and businesses of a bricklayer and chinaman in which I am now engaged in such way and manner as to them shall seem meet until the youngest of my children who shall be living shall attain his age of twenty-one [21] years, and for that end and purpose do and shall permit and suffer and authorize and empower my said son, GEORGE RUCK, to use, occupy and enjoy the messuage or tenement and premises wherein I now reside and the buildings, yards and premises holden by me for the carrying on the same trades and businesses or otherwise in relation thereto, for and during such time as he shall be engaged in carrying on the same for the purposes of this my Will without him with or requiring any rent or other consideration for the same.

      And I hereby request and direct my said son, GEORGE RUCK, to undertake the management and carrying on of the same trades and businesses accordingly until my said youngest child living shall attain his age of twenty-one [21] years.

      And upon further trust until my said youngest child who shall be living shall attain his age of twenty-one [21] years that they, my said Trustees or the survivors or survivor of them, do and shall receive and take the profits and proceeds of my said trades and businesses and the rents, issues and profits of my said messuages or tenements, lands, hereditaments and other my real and personal estate whatsoever and pay one moiety of the said profits and proceeds of my said trades and businesses unto my son, GEORGE RUCK, or otherwise permit and suffer him to retain the same to and for his own use and benefit for his trouble, care and attention in the managing and carrying on of my said trades and business, and the other moiety thereof the said rents, issues and profits of my said other estate and effects or so much thereof as they, my said Trustees, shall deem sufficient pay, apply and dispose of for and towards the support and maintenance of my two younger children, FREDERICK RUCK and WILLIAM HENRY RUCK, during their respective minorities and the residue (if any) of such last mentioned moiety rents, issues and profits to lay out and invest in some or one
      of the public stocks or funds of this United Kingdom or upon good real security at interest to accumulate for the benefit of and to go to my said four children equally as hereinafter mentioned.

      And from and after my said youngest child for the time being shall have attained his age of twenty-one [21] years then upon further trusts as to, for and concerning my said trades and businesses and the stocks of poles and scaffolding, ladders, barrows, tools and implements of trade belonging to my said trade and business of a bricklayer for my said son, GEORGE RUCK, to and for his own use and benefit absolutely and to be assigned, transferred and set over to him accordingly.

      And as to, for and concerning all and every my said messuages or tenements, lands, hereditaments and real estate whatsoever and all and every the stock that shall or may then be of my said trade and business of a chinaman and all and singular my household furniture, plate, linen, china, effects, personal estate and things whatsoever not hereinbefore by me disposed of upon trust that they, my said Trustees, or the survivors or survivor of them, his Executors or Administrators, do and shall as soon as conveniently may be thereafter and in such manner as to them, him or her shall seem best and most advantageous, absolutely sell and dispose of the same and every part and parcel thereof and for that purpose do and shall make and execute all proper and effectual conveyances, assignments and assurances in the law whatsoever for vesting the same in the purchaser or purchasers thereof and his, her and their heirs, Executors, Administrators and assigns respectively.

      And I do hereby declare that the receipt and receipts of my said Trustees or of the Trustees or Trustee for the time being of this my Will for the purchase monies thereof or of any part thereof shall be a good and effectual discharge and good and effectual discharges for the same or for so much thereof as in such receipt or receipts shall be expressed to be received and that the said purchaser or purchasers after paying his, her or their said purchase money to my said Trustees or Trustee for the time being shall not be answerable or accountable for the same or for any part thereof or for the misapplication or non-application thereof and as to, for and concerning the monies to arise by or from such sale or sales and also all and every other my monies and securities for money, book debts and personal estate whatsoever not hereinbefore by me disposed of and the accumulations and increase thereof upon trust to divide and pay the same between and amongst my said four children GEORGE RUCK, JAMES RUCK, FREDERICK RUCK and WILLIAM HENRY RUCK equally share and share alike, to and for their own respective uses and benefits absolutely, provided always nevertheless that in the sale and disposition of the messuage or tenement and premises wherein I now reside situate in the High Street in Maidstone aforesaid, my will and mind is and I do hereby direct that my said son, GEORGE RUCK, shall have the offer and option to take and purchase the same for his own use and benefit at and for such price and sum of money as any two indifferent proper persons to be named one by my said son, GEORGE, and the other by my said other Trustees or their umpire to be nominated in the usual manner of valuations, shall estimate and value the same to be fairly worth before the same shall be offered for sale to any other person or in any other manner whatsoever, it being my wish and desire that he should continue in the same if he should be then able and choose so to do. Provided also and my will and mind further is that they, my said Trustees and Executors, and the Trustees or Trustee of this my Will for the time being or any or either of them shall not be answerable or accountable for any loss or losses that shall or may happen to my aforesaid estate, monies and premises or any part thereof unless the same shall happen by or through their, his or her willful neglect or default nor shall any or either of them be answerable or accountable for any more of my aforesaid estate, monies and premises than they shall respectively actually receive, nor the one or more of them for the others or other of them or for the acts, deeds, receipts or disbursements of the others or other of them but each of them only for his own acts, deeds, receipts and disbursements. And I direct that they and each and every of them do and shall by and out of my aforesaid estate monies and premises deduct to retain, pay and reimburse themselves and himself respectively all such loss, costs, charges, damages and expenses as they any or either of them, their any or either of their heirs, Executors or Administrators shall or may pay, bear, sustain, expend, incur or be put unto in or about the execution of this my Will or the trusts hereby in them reposed or in any wise relating thereto.
      And lastly I do hereby revoke, annul and make void all and every former and other Will and Wills by me made and do declare this only to be and contain my last Will and Testament.

      IN WITNESS WHEREOF I, the said JOHN RUCK, the Testator, have to this my last Will and Testament contained in this and the four preceding sheets of paper set my hand and seal to wit, my hand at the bottom of the four first sheets and my hand and seal to this fifth and last sheet thereof, this sixth [6] day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty-two [1822].

      Last Will and Testament in the presence of us who, in
      His presence at his request and in the presence of each
      Other, have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses John Ruck
      Thereto, the interlineations between the twentieth and
      Twenty-first and the twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth lines
      And the obliteration in the said twenty-first line of the
      Second sheet thereof having been first made and written.

      PROVED at London 1st July 1822 before the Judge by the oaths of GEORGE RUCK and JAMES RUCK, the sons and JOHN VINE HALL, the Executors to whom administration was granted having been first sworn by commission duly to administer.
