- [S113] Stemmata Chicheleana: or, a genealogical account of some of the families derived from Thomas Chichele, of Higham-Ferrers, Ed., A.S.C., Oxford, England, (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1765.), Preface, x-xii, 1765.
John, the second Son of Alderman Chichele, was a Citizen, and Chamberlain
of London; but of what Trade he was doth not appear. He lived in Harp
Lane, in a large House which hath since been converted into the Bakers Hall,
and had another House and an Estate near Wolwich [sic]. He married Margery the
Daughter of Sir Thomas Knolles Kt. [he was Lord Mayor of London in the I and again in the 12 Hen IV] and by her (for, at least, we find not that he had any other Wife) he had four and twenty children [here inserted was a footnote spread over Preface, x-xi concerning the issue of Sir Thomas Knolles and his son, which, for this purpose has been included with the sources regarding that individual]. We shall reckon up as many of these as have come to our Knowledge, with the few particulars we find recorded of them. [Here inserted were brief accounts of 19 of the 24 children, dealt with in the sources for each of those individuals.]
Thus we have been able to account, in some Measure, for nineteen of the four and twenty Children of John Chichele. The other five seem to be so totally sunk in Oblivion, that we cannot entertain the most distant hopes of retrieving them. Perhaps the Reader thinks the Catalogue long enough already. But there is a pleasing Kind of Enthusiasm, which attends even the making such trifling Discoveries as these we have here collected, when they relate to one, for whom every Principle of Gratitude demands our Love and Veneration.
