From the Tucker pedigree published in the Visitation of Kent, page 3,[2] it appears that George Tucker, son and heir of William Tucker of Throuley (Throwleigh), co. Devon, Esq., was of Milton
[Footnotes]
[1] In identifying Robert Tucker of Weymouth and Milton, Mass., with Robert Tucker, son of George Tucker of Milton next Gravesend, co. Kent, the compiler of the Genealogy of the Tucker Family followed the statements about the birthplace of Robert Tucker, the New England settler published in 1887 in the History of Milton, Mass., pp. 37-38.
[2] Publications of the Harleian Society, vol. 42, London, 1898. The Visitation pedigree used by Mr. Ephraim Tucker in preparing his book is that found in Harleian Manuscript 1106, which differs somewhat from the pedigree published by the Harleian Society in 1898, three years after the appearance of the Genealogy of the Tucker Family. The differences, however, are without importance in proving or disproving Mr. Tucker's conjecture in regard to the English origin of John and Robert Tucker of Massachusetts.
Page 233
(next Gravesend), co. Kent, and that George Tucker, son and hein of George and grandson of William, was likewise of Milton. By his first wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Francis Staughton of Craford (Crayford), co. Kent, this second George Tucker had a son George, aged 25 at the taking of the Visitation; and by his second wife, Mary, daughter of John Darrell[1] of Cadehill (Cale Hill, in the parish of Little Chart, co. Kent), Esq., he had, at the time of the Visitation, sons John, aged 19, Robert, aged 14, and Henry, aged 8, and daughters Hester, Elizabeth, Mary, Ann, Sarah, and Martha.
In his will, dated 11 Nov. 1622, an abstract of which is given below, George Tucker names all these daughters except Elizabeth, "Marie" being under twenty-one, Ann being already married, and Sarah, Martha, and Hester being under nineteen. He names also, in addition to the four sons mentioned in the Visitation, a son Daniel, who was probably born after the taking of the Visitation, John Darell, Esq., deceased, his wife's father, and Sir Robert Darell, Knight, and John Darell, Esq., his wife's brothers. This will and a codicil of 14 Dec. 1625, attached thereto, show that George Tucker and his brother, Capt. Daniel Tucker, held shares in the "Summer Islands," i.e. the Bermudas, and that Capt. Daniel Tucker had recently given shares in these islands to his nephew Daniel, son of the testator of 1622.
The prominence of this Tucker family in the Burmudas, in Barbados, and in Virginia and South Carolina, has long been known and recognized. George Tucker, the testator of 1622, and his brother Daniel were members of the Virginia Company; and Daniel sailed for Virginia in 1606, was a leading man in the Colony from 1608 to 1613, was commissioned Governor of the Bermudas 15 Feb. 1615/16, and was in those islands from May 16 to about Jan. 1618/19. He purchased lands in Virginia in 1621, and died at Port Royal, Bermuda, 10 Feb. 1624-5. George Tucker, eldest son of the testator of 1622, went to the Bermuda Islands in the time of the Civil War in England, but returned to England. His will, an abstract of which is given below, is dated 23 Aug. 1639 and was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury 2 May 1648. In it he describes himself as of Dartford, co. Kent, Gentleman, and gives to his eldest son, George, all his lands in the Bermuda Islands, except two shares which he gives to the second son, Francis, and two shares which he gives to his third son, Robert. George Tucker, the eldest son of the testator, settled in Bermuda, and by his wife Frances, daughter of Sir Henry St. George, Knight, Garter and Principal King of Arms, became the ancestor of a branch of the family of which several members held public positions of honor and trust or distinguished themselves in professional and mercantile life. Some of his descendants became officers in the British Army and Navy, others migrated to Barbados, Virginia, or South Carolina, and one of them, St. George Tucker, born in 1752, settled in Virginia, became a judge and a professor of law in William and Mary College, and was the founder of a well-known family in that State. Henry Tucker, half brother of George

Page 234
Tucker the testator of 1639, also settled, it is believed, in the Bermudas, and had many descendants.[1]
The six wills of which abstracts are given below[2] confirm certain parts of the Tucker pedigree found in the Visitation of Kent, 1619-1621, and supply much information about the genealogy and social standing of the Tucker family of Milton next Gravesend and of the ancient and eminent Darell family with which is was connected by marriage. They should, therefore, be of interest to the Tuckers of the present day in Virginia and other southern States, for the descendants of George Tucker, the testator of 1639, as well as those of his half brother Henry, may trace their ancestry back to the Darells of Kent, Elizabeth, wife of George Tucker and mother of his children, having been a daughter of Richard Sedley of Digswell, co. Herts, Esq., by his wife Elizabeth, who was a daughter of John Darrell of Cale Hill, co. Kent, Esq., and therefore a sister of Mary Darell, second wife of George Tucker, the testator of 1622.[3] These wills are also of value to descendants of New England Tuckers, because they disprove the English ancestry assigned in the "Genealogy of the Tucker Family" to John Tucker of Watertown and Hingham and to Robert Tucker of Weymouth and Milton, Mass.
The compiler of the "Genealogy," following the statements made and the records given in the "History of Milton, Mass," found that, according to the Visitation of Kent, 1619-1621, George Tucker of Milton (next Gravesend), the second George Tucker of the pedigree, had a son John, aged 19 at the time of the Visitation, and a son Robert, aged 14 at the same time. He found also that, according to the "History of Milton, Mass.," the parish registers of Milton next Gravesend record the following baptisms of children of George Tucker, Gentleman: John, in 1599; Elizabeth, 25 Mar. 1601; Maria (Mary), 24 Mar. 1602 (1602/3); Robert, 7 June 1604;[4] Henry, in 1612. Now since John and Robert, two of the sons of George Tucker, were apparently of the right age to be the John and Robert Tucker who came to New England, since, moreover, according to the "History of Milton, Mass.," the Tucker family disappeared from the English Milton soon after 1637, and since, finally, Robert Tucker of Massachusetts was prominent among the early settlers of Milton

[2] Two of thse wills have already appear in prin--that of George Tucker, the testor of 1622, in The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, vol. 17, pp. 394-395, and that of his son George, the testator of 1639, in the same publication, vol. 39, pp. 354-355. The importance of these two wills in the history of the Tucker family and, especially, the reference in the will of the younger George to his (half) brothers John and Robert, whom the late Ephraim Tucker claimed as settlers of Massachusetts, warrant their reproduction in this article. The abstract of the first of these two wills has been adapted from the abstract printed in The Virginia Magazine, while that of the second will has been made directly from the recorded copy of the will in Somerset House, London, and has been compared with the abstract printed in The Virginia Magazine.
[3] Cf. the pedigree of Sedley of Digswell, published in The Visitations of Hertfordshire, p. 91 (Publications of the Harleian Society, vol. 22). This pedigree gives children of George and Elizabeth (Sedley) Tucker as follows: 1. George. 2. Francis. 3. Robert. 4. Elisabeth. It is, therefore, in agreement with the statements of the will of George Tucker. Cf. also the pedigree of Darrell, in The Visitation of Kent, 1619, p. 187.
[4] In the History of Milton, Mass., and in the Genealogy this entry, under the year 1604, is given as follows: "Robert ye sonne of George Tucker Gent one of the Burghers at this font was baptized ye VII of June." The correct reading of this entry is "Robert ye sonne of George Tucker Gent one of the Searchers at this port was baptized ye VII of June." The father was, therefore, in the English customs service.
Page 235
in that Colony, a town which might have been named in honor of the English home of one or more of its settlers, Mr. Tucker in the "Genealogy" stated that Robert Tucker of Milton next Gravesend was "doubtless the progenitor of the Milton (Mass.) Tuckers," and identified his brother John with the settler of that name in Watertown and Hingham.
The wills given below, however, prove that John and Robert Tucker, sons of George Tucker of Milton next Gravesend, co. Kent, were living in England after their namesakes appear in Massachusetts--John being in England in 1639, 1642, and 1644, and his brother Robert being there in 1639, when, according to the will of his half brother George, he was evidently incapable of managing his own affairs. Neither John nor Robert Tucker of Massachusetts is ever called Gentleman in the Colonial records, although the members of the Kentish family are regularly designated as Gentlemen or Esquires. The conclusion is, therefore, unavoidable, that the English ancestry of these two settlers of Massachusetts has yet to be discovered. | TUCKER, George Esq. (I20111)

Julian Otto Trevelyan, RA (20 February 1910 - 12 July 1988 ) was a British artist and poet.
Trevelyan was the only child of Robert Calverley Trevelyan and his wife Elizabeth van der Hoeven. His grandfather was the liberal politician Sir George Otto Trevelyan and his uncle the historian George Macaulay Trevelyan.
Julian Trevelyan was educated at Bedales School and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he read English Literature.
He moved to Paris to become an artist and enrolled at Atelier Dix-Sept, Stanley William Hayter 's engraving school, where he learned about etching. He worked alongside famous artists including Max Ernst, Oskar Kokoschka, Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso.
In 1935, Trevelyan bought Durham Wharf, beside the River Thames in Hammersmith, London. This became his home and studio for the rest of his life and was a source of artistic inspiration to him. He became a confirmed Surrealist and exhibited at the International Surrealist Exhibition, held at the New Burlington Galleries in London.
He married Ursula Darwin, daughter of Bernard Darwin and great-granddaughter of Charles Darwin, but their marriage was dissolved in 1950. Their son is the film-maker Philip Trevelyan. Julian Trevelyan married the painter Mary Fedden in 1951.
From 1950 to 1955, Trevelyan taught history of art and etching at the Chelsea School of Art . During 1955-63, he was Tutor of Engraving at the Royal College of Art, rising to Head of the Etching Department where he was influential to many younger printmakers, including David Hockney and Norman Ackroyd.
In July 1986, Trevelyan was awarded a senior fellowship at the Royal College of Art and in September 1987 he was appointed a Royal Academician.
Trevelyan died on 12 July 1988 in Hammersmith, London.
Trevelyan's work has been exhibited at the Bloomsbury Gallery, Messum's and the New Burlington Galleries in London, and the Bohun Gallery and River and Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames, among other places.
========================
The following details kindly provided by the Bohun Gallery:
1910 Born 20th February, Leith Hill near Dorking, the only surviving child of the classical scholar and poet Robert Calverley Trevelyan and his Dutch wife Elizabeth van der Hoeven. Julian was the grandson of Sir George Otto Trevelyan, Liberal politician and writer and nephew of the historian George Macaulay Trevelyan.
1923-28 Educated at Bedales School where his interest in art was encouraged by an inspirational teacher, Gigi Meo. His first published prints appeared in a number of issues of the school magazine The Ray.
1928-30 Aged 18, Trevelyan went to Trinity College, Cambridge to read English Literature. There his circle of friends included Jacob Bronowski, Kathleen Raine, George Reavey and Humphrey Jennings. It was Jennings who introduced him to French painting and Surrealist ideas.
1931 Trevelyan left Cambridge before completing his tripos and moved to Paris to become an artist, eventually enrolling in Stanley William Hayter's engraving school 'Atelier Dix-Sept', where he first learnt the techniques of etching. In Hayter's studio he worked alongside such figures as Max Ernst, Oska Kokoshka, Joan Miró and Picasso.
1932-34 Trevelyan's first joint exhibition (with Robin Darwin) was held at the Bloomsbury Gallery, London. His second exhibition at the Bloomsbury was shared with the potter Ursula Darwin whom he was later to marry.
1935 Trevelyan discovered and bought Durham Wharf, by the Thames in Hammersmith, which became his home and studio for the rest of his life and a constant source of artistic inspiration.
1936 When Trevelyan returned to London he became a confirmed Surrealist and exhibited at the famous International Exhibition of Surrealism at the New Burlington Galleries, London.
1937 Joined Tom Harrison, Humphrey Jennings and Charles Madge's Mass Observation team. Also joined the English Surrealist Group and participated in a number of Surrealist exhibitions in London and became a member of the Artists International Association and exhibited with them.
1938 He resigned from the English Surrealist Group and attended pacifist demonstrations and produced work in support of the Republican government during the Spanish Civil War.
1940-43 Joined S. W. Hayter's Industrial Camouflage Research unit and subsequently served as a camouflage officer with the Royal Engineers. In 1943 his only child, Philip Erasmus was born.
1946-50 Travelled widely. Made his first lithograph Harbour for Schools Prints Ltd. Marriage to Ursula broke down and they were divorced in 1950.
1951-55 Married the painter Mary Fedden. They both painted a series of murals for the Festival of Britain and the Wheatley Road School in Welwyn Garden City. Trevelyan returned to Hayter's workshops to update his etching techniques and began multi-plate printing. Between 1950 and 1955 he taught history of art and etching at the Chelsea School of Art.
1955-63 Trevelyan was appointed as Tutor of Engraving at the Royal College of Art, eventually becoming Head of the Etching Department where he influenced a new generation of printmakers including the young David Hockney. In 1957 Trevelyan's autobiography, Indigo Days was published by MacGibbon and Kee.
1963 Trevelyan suffered an unidentified viral infection of the brain which permanently affected his speech and obliged him to give up teaching. It was to printmaking that he first turned when he started to work again and in the same year his book Etching, Modern Methods of Intaglio Printmaking was published by Studio Publications.
1965-75 Trevelyan was one of the founder members of the Printmakers' Council in London (elected President in 1973). In 1971 he began a contract with Leslie Waddington Prints Ltd and produced work solely for them until 1975.
1975-85 Travelled widely with Mary, always sketching the places they visited which were then turned into paintings and prints on their return home. In 1983 the first retrospective of his etchings was held at Bohun Gallery in Henley-on-Thames and in 1985 a retrospective of paintings and prints was held at the Waterman's Art Centre, Brentford. Trevelyan's final print, The Bridge was made in 1985.
1986-88 In July 1986 Trevelyan was awarded a senior Fellowship of the Royal College of Art and in September 1987 was appointed Academician of the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Julian Trevelyan died in Hammersmith on 12 July 1988.

Richard I "Sans Peur" ("the Fearless")
Leader of the Normans of Rouen [anachronistically, "duke of Normandy"], 942-996.
A minor at the assassination of his father William in 942, it was largely during Richard's long period of rule that what eventually became the duchy of Normandy evolved from what was essentially a pirate principality into a feudal state. Richard is described by such a wide range of words (comes, marchio, consul, princeps, dux) by various sources (sometimes of dubious authority) that it would be difficult to argue that there is a specific "title" by which he should be called [see Helmerichs 1997]. Richard was succeeded by his son Richard II in 996.
Date of Death: 21 November 996.

Spouses:
m. (1) 960 [Flodoard's Annals, s.a. 960 (MGH SS 3, 405)], Emma of France, still alive 966 [GND 1: 129, n. 6, citing Fauroux (1961), #3], d.s.p. [Dudo iv, 85 (p. 163); GND iv, 18 (vol. 1, pp. 128-9)], daughter of Hughes le Grand, duke of France. [Flodoard's Annals, s.a. 960 (MGH SS 3: 405); GND iv, 10, 18 (vol. 1, pp. 116-7, 128-9)]

RHF 10: 324 (year only); Ex Obituario Gemmeticensi, RHF 23, 417 (4 Jan.); Notæ Monasterii Montis Sancti Micaelis, RHF 23, 576 (8 Jan.)]. Robert de Torigny, in his additions to GND, stated that she was first Richard's mistress, and that the marriage occurred after the birth of the children. [GND (Rob. Tor.) viii, 36 (vol. 2, pp. 266-9)]
Children:
by Gunnor:
Dudo iv, 125 (p. 164) indicates that there were five sons and three daughters of this union, without listing them. Of the children, Guillaume de Jumièges names Richard, Robert, and Mauger, and all three of the daughters, including their marriages [GND iv, 18 (vol. 1, pp. 128-131)].
MALE Richard II, d. 23 August 1026, duke of Normandy.
MALE Robert, d. 1037, archbishop of Rouen and count of Évreux.
MALE Mauger, died after 1033, count of Corbeil.
MALE Robertus Danus, d. bef. 985×989.
[See the note by Elisabeth van Houts in GND 1: 130 (she cites Fauroux (1961), 22 and Obit. Sens 2: 193)]
MALE son
One additional son of Richard and Gunnor is needed to make the total come to five.
FEMALE Emma of Normandy, d. 1052;
m. (1) Æthelred II "the Unready", d. 23 April 1016, king of England;
m. (2) Knud/Canute, d. 1035, king of England, Denmark and Norway.
FEMALE Hawise, d. 1034, m. Geoffrey I, duke of Bretagne (Brittany).
FEMALE Mathilde, d. bef. 1005, m. Eudes II, count of Blois.
by unknown mistress(es):
Dudo [iv, 125 (p. 163)] states that Richard had two sons (named as Geoffrey and Guillaume) and two daughters (unnamed) by other mistresses. The fact that the number of daughters matches the additional daughters who can be established from other sources is probably a coincidence.
MALE Godefroy/Geoffrey, count of Eu and Brionne.
MALE Guillaume, count of Eu, prob. d. bef. 1040 [see Douglas (1946), 137-8].
MALE Robert, count of Avranches.
That count Robert was an illegitimate son of Richard was proposed by Douglas (1946). The arguments given in Potts (1992) seem to place this attribution beyond any reasonable doubt. The key pieces of evidence given by Potts are the statement of Vita Gauzlini that Robert's son Richard was a nephew of Richard II, and a charter of William the Conqueror referring to Robert as brother of Richard II.
FEMALE Béatrix, abbess of Montvilliers in 1035, earlier m. Ebles, viscount of Turenne
[From The Miracles of Sainte-Foy, with translated excerpts in van Houts (2000), 215-7]
FEMALE(probable) daughter, m. Gulbert, advocate of St. Valéry-en-Caux.
The main primary source is OV vi, 8 [vol. The "duke Richard" whose daughter married Gulbert has been variously identified, e.g., as Richard I [e.g., Searle (1988), 100, 289], Richard II [e.g., Stasser (1990), 56], and even Richard III [e.g., Douglas (1964), 65]. Although Searle did not explicitly state her reason for making Richard I the father of Gulbert's wife, it seems clear that it was based on chronological considerations, for she cites a charter of 1025 [Faroux no. 34] which was attested by Richard son of Gulbert, which seems to rule out that Richard's mother could be a daughter of any Norman duke later than Richard I. The chronology of other members of the family also fits well with Richard I as Gulbert's father-in-law. The matter has been confused somewhat by two other references, one in the ninth book of Orderic's Ecclesiastical History, in a list of those joining Robert Curthose on Crusade in 1096 ["... Gualterius comes de Sancto Gualerico Ricardi iunioris ducis Normannorum ex filia nomine Papia nepos, ...", OV, 5: 34-5], and the other in Robert de Torigny's Chronicle under the year 1026 ["Mortuo Ricardo secundo duce Normannorum, filio primi Ricardi, successit ei filius eius Ricardus tercius. Hic genuit Nicolaum postea abbatem Sancti Audoeni et duas filias, Papiam videlicet uxorem Walteri de Sancto Walerico, et Aeliz, uxorem Ranulfi vicecomitis de Baiocis.", Chr. Rob. Tor., MGH SS 6: 478]. It seems difficult to reconcile all three accounts without having marriages between the families in three succesive generations, which would give highly unlikely first-cousin marriages in two successive generations. It seems likely that at least one of the three accounts is confused (most likely Orderic's second account). Since the accounts could well be describing more than one marriage between the two families, the name of Gulbert's wife is unclear. The above contradictions (which make it possible that it is Orderic's first account that is confused), and the fact that there is no known contemporary proof for the relationship, is why the link is listed as "probable" above. Given the lack of a detailed discussion in the secondary sources mentioning this link, a more detailed study would be desirable. (In September 2002, there was a thread entitled "Reginald de St. Valery and His Descendants" in the soc.genealogy.medieval/GEN-MEDIEVAL internet newsgroup/mailing list, in which some of the postings discussed this matter, including one by Todd Farmerie that discussed the above chronological considerations.)
See Commentary for supposed additional children.
Commentary
Falsely attributed children:
FEMALE Muriella, m. Tancred de Hauteville.
MALE Fredesende, m. Tancred de Hauteville.
These two women are sometimes also given as children of Richard II. ES 2, 79 places them as children of Richard I. See the page of Richard II for a discussion of why they should not be placed as daughters of either one of these Norman leaders.

============================================================================
The line to the dukes of Normandy comes through Isabel St. Liz, and the line to Charlemagne comes through her husband, William Mauduit. The lines merge again with the marriage of Richard I, Duke of Normandy, and Emma, daughter of Hugh, who was -in all but name- King of France. His son, Hugh Capet, later assumed the title, and primogeniture began in the French line of kings.
The two lines met again later with the marriage of Adele, daughter of King Robert II, and Richard III, Duke of Normandy. Richard I, "the Fearless"; named father's heir 29 May 942. Married first (Danish wife) Gunnora but betrothed ca. 945 and eventually married 960 to Emma. Richard was betrothed to Emma for some time but did not marry her until about 960, after the death of her father, Hugh the Great, in 956. Richard was the guardian of Hugh's son, the Duke of Paris, and eventually married Emma to strengthen his position. He did not treat her unkindly, he merely loved Gunnora. Poor Emma passed her life at Rouen alone and solitary, and eventually she pined away and died about the year 962. After Emma's death he married (Christian marriage) Gunnora to legitimize their children.

Richard I, also known as Richard the Fearless was the Count of Rouen or Jarl of Rouen from 942 to 996. Dudo of Saint-Quentin, whom Richard commissioned to write the "De moribus et actis primorum Normanniae ducum", called him a Dux. However, this use of the word may have been in the context of Richard's renowned leadership in war, and not as a reference to a title of nobility.[2][3] Richard either introduced feudalism into Normandy or he greatly expanded it. By the end of his reign, most important Norman landholders held their lands in feudal tenure.[4]
Birth[edit]
Richard was born to William Longsword, princeps (chieftain or ruler)[5] of Normandy, and Sprota.[1] His mother was a Breton concubine captured in war and bound to William by a more danico marriage.[6] He was also the grandson of the famous Rollo. William was told of the birth of a son after the battle with Riouf and other Viking rebels, but his existence was kept secret until a few years later when William Longsword first met his son Richard. After kissing the boy and declaring him his heir, William sent Richard to be raised in Bayeux.[7] Richard was about ten years old when his father was killed on 17 December 942.[1] After William was killed, Sprota became the wife of Esperleng, a wealthy miller. Rodulf of Ivry was their son and Richard's half-brother.[8]
Life[edit]
With the death of Richard's father in 942, King Louis IV of France installed the boy, Richard, in his father's office. Under the influence of Arnulf I, Count of Flanders the King took him into Frankish territory[9]:32–4 and placing him in the custody of the count of Ponthieu before the King reneged and seized the lands of the Duchy of Normandy.[10] He then split up the Duchy, giving its lands in lower Normandy to Hugh the Great. Louis IV thereafter kept Richard in close confinement at Lâon,[11] but the youth escaped from imprisonment[9]:36–7 with assistance of Osmond de Centville, Bernard de Senlis (who had been a companion of Rollo of Normandy), Ivo de Bellèsme, and Bernard the Dane[12] (ancestor to the families of Harcourt and Beaumont).[a]
In 946, at the age of 14, Richard allied himself with the Norman and Viking leaders in France and with men sent by King Harold of Denmark. A battle was fought after which Louis IV was captured. Hostages were taken and held until King Louis recognised Richard as Duke, returning Normandy to him.[9]:37–41 Richard agreed to "commend" himself to Hugh, the Count of Paris, Hugh resolved to form a permanent alliance with Richard and promised his daughter Emma, who was just a child, as a bride, the marriage would take place in 960.[9]:41–2
Louis IV working with Arnulf I, Count of Flanders persuaded Otto I, Holy Roman Emperor to attack Richard and Hugh. The combined armies of Otto, Arnulf and Louis IV were driven from the gates of Rouen, fleeing to Amiens and being decisively defeated in 947.[9]:41–2[13] A period of peace ensued, Louis IV dying in 954, 13 year old Lothair becoming King. The middle aged Hugh appointed Richard as guardian of his 15-year-old son, Hugh Capet in 955.[9]:44
In 962, Theobald I, Count of Blois, attempted a renewed invasion of Rouen, Richard's stronghold, but his troops were summarily routed by Normans under Richard's command, and forced to retreat before ever having crossed the Seine river.[14][15] Lothair, the king of the West Franks, was fearful that Richard's retaliation could destabilize a large part of West Francia so he stepped in to prevent any further war between the two.[16] In 987 Hugh Capet became King of the Franks.
For the last 30 years until his death in 996 in Fécamp, Richard concentrated on Normandy itself, and participated less in Frankish politics and its petty wars. In lieu of building up the Norman Empire by expansion, he stabilized the realm and reunited the Normans, forging the reclaimed Duchy of his father and grandfather into West Francia's most cohesive and formidable principality.[17]
Richard was succeeded in November 996 by his 33-year-old son, Richard II, Duke of Normandy.
Relationships with France, England and the Church[edit]
Richard used marriage to build strong alliances. His marriage to Emma of Paris connected him directly to the House of Capet. His second wife, Gunnora, from a rival Viking group in the Cotentin, formed an alliance to that group, while her sisters formed the core group that were to provide loyal followers to him and his successors.[18]
His daughters forged valuable marriage alliances with powerful neighboring counts as well as to the king of England.[18] Emma marrying firstly Æthelred the Unready and after his death in 1016, the invader, Cnut the Great. Her children included three English kings, Edward the Confessor, Alfred Aetheling and with Cnut, Harthacnut so completing a major link between the Duke of Normandy and the Crown of England that would add validity to the claim by the future William the Conqueror to the throne of England.
Richard also built on his relationship with the church, undertaking acts of piety,[19]:lv restoring their lands and ensuring the great monasteries flourished in Normandy. His further reign was marked by an extended period of peace and tranquility.[18][20]
Marriages[edit]
Richard & his children
His first marriage in 960 was to Emma, daughter of Hugh "The Great" of France,[1][21] and Hedwig von Sachsen.[21] They were betrothed when both were very young. She died after 19 March 968, with no issue.[1]
According to Robert of Torigni, not long after Emma's death, Duke Richard went out hunting and stopped at the house of a local forester. He became enamored with the forester's wife, Seinfreda, but she was a virtuous woman and suggested he court her unmarried sister, Gunnor, instead. Gunnor became his mistress and her family rose to prominence. Her brother, Herefast de Crepon, may have been involved in a controversial heresy trial. Gunnor was, like Richard, of Viking descent, being a Dane by blood. Richard finally married her to legitimize their children:[b]

There were several families of the name of Rundle resident at Milton Abbot, late in the sixteenth century. "The Monthly Magazine or British Register," vol. xxix, part 1, pp. 458, 462 (A.D 1810), contains a Transcript of the Parish expenditure there for the year 1588. There is no statement to show how it was procured, and the original document does not appear to have been returned to its rightful owners, and no information whatever concerning it is now procurable. But the printed copy has been re-edited by Mr .Pengelly, F.R.S., Trans. Devon Assoc. I learn from it that in this year (1558) there was one John Rundle living on the farm known as "Wilsley" a certain Thomas Rundle resident in the hamlet of Foghanger, and another Thomas at "Youngecot."
Thomas Rundle, born at Milton Abbot in the year 1686, was educated at Exeter Grammar School, and in due course entered at Exeter Coll. as a sojourner, where his tutor was Thomas, son of Thomas Rennel, of Chudleigh. He took his degree as Bachelor of Laws in 1710. In 1716 he was collated to a Prebend in Salisbury Cathedral, that of Gillingham Minor, on the cession of John Holland, and was installed on the 20th October; and on the 13th January, 1720-1, he became Treasurer o the same church. On the 26th April, 1720 he was appointed Archdeacon of Wilts and in the following January was preferred to a stall at Durham. He was consecretaed Bishop of Derry 1734-5. His friend and patron appears to have been Bishop Talbot, of Oxford and Salisbury, who was afterwards translated to Durham, by whomm he had been ordained, and by whose influence he would have doubtless reached the English Bench had it not been for the opposition of Gibson, Bishop of London, caused by the suspicions entertained of his orthodoxy
According to Whiston, he had become, at an early age, "a convert to Arianism," which seems, however, doubtful. Gorton says that the resistance offered to his promotion by the Bishop of London "alone makes a notice of him necessary," and he only accord him about a dozen lines Bishop Rundle died on the 15th April, 1743 He printed a few sermons; and his letters, with a memoir, were published in 1790.
[Source: ibid. Parish of Lamerton, pp 199-201.]
For some years it appears to have been in the family of Roundell, or Rundle. In the north aisle of the parish church was an inscription to "William Roundell, of Willestrewe, buried in the year 1532. In Chancery proceedings in the reigh of Elizabeth, there is a record of "Relief as to forcible possession, etc meadow grounds in Lamerton, co. Devon Plaintiff John Satchfield; defendants, John Bennett and Phillip Rundell" "cause to protect title by purchase, land in Lamerton, Co Devon; plaintiff, John Satchfield; defendants, John Bennett and Phillip Rundell." In the parish registers there are a great number of entries relative to members of this family, variously spelt Roundell, Rondel, Rundell, and Rundle; and the name occurs more frequently than any other between the years 1631 and 1641. Among the earlier entries may be found: -
Thomas Rondel, sonne of Nicholas, baptised th Maye, 1572
Thomas Roundel and Agnes Caunter married 12th October, 1607.
And in 1677 there is an entry of the marriage of Richard Rundle, and Frances Edgecumbe.
Dr. Thomas Rundle, Lord Bishop of Derry in 1734-5 (is believed to have been a member of this family), but he appears to have been born in the neighbouring parish of Milton Abbot.
Frances, wife of Richard Rundle, was the daughter of Roger Edgecomb, of Lamerton, and was baptized ther 22nd November 1650. I may remark that the above pedigree of Edgecumbe is not included in the Visitation of 156, published by Dr Colby in 1881.

George GREGORY and Susan Dara YOUNG are 2nd cousins 2 times removed. Their common ancestors are Edward GREGORY and Christian MILSTED.
This is the fellow with whom I corresponded during the early 1990s up until his death. Christopher, his son, at Christmas 2002 very generously sent me two books from the Fleur-de-lis Heritage Society: Faversham Oyster Fisheries through the Years and a photographic record of the town. I have been in touch with Christopher sporadically over the years since his father's death. He, during the early 1990s was the Captain of the Dover-Calais ferry and is frequently away from home.
A news article appears in the local Faversham newspaper on 1 February 1987 in the "Chronicler's Diary" column, a transcript of which follows below.
"George's fond farewell.
George Gregory, the man who has single-handedly maintained Faversham Creek swing bridge for five years, will soon be ending his third career.
For George, now a spritely 71, will be retiring from his post as bridge hand for the Medway Ports Authority early in the new year.
He has worked on the bridge over the town's waterway for 13 years, but before that was a shopkeeper at Davington and, for much of his life, a farmer at Ham.
Born at Lower Brents in 1915, George attended Davington School and then joined the family farming business at Ham Farm.
In the early days his father concentrated on dairy farming, and George ran the retail milk round, first with a pony and trap, then with a motorcycle combination and finally a pukka milk van.
Although he was an entered apprentice with the Faversham Oyster Fishery Company in 1929, he never pursued that vocation because an Act of Parliament the following year ended many of the rights and privileges of company Freemen.
However, he was a shareholder of the ancient company.
George reckons his family, along with the Danes and Jemmetts, is one of the oldest in the town and he has traced back his lineage 800 years. [A claim that has not been proven through my research, as of yet.] Henry II granted royal rights for oyster fishing to the Gregorys.
And George is certain some of his ancestors fought for England against the Spanish Armada in the 16th century.
He has been in love with the creek ever since wading into the water on Front Brents as a three-year-old.
"In the 1920s I remember lying in bed in the early mornings and hearing the dredgemen in their thigh length leather boots crunch past our home on their way to Hollowshore," he said.
For around 25 years he worked on and latterly ran Ham Farm before finally selling it in 1961.
For the next 11 years George and his wife Peg ran a general store at Priory Row, Davington, which did good business.
George sold the shop when he was 58 but then he heard that the post of bridge hand was vacant so he joined river inspector John Cotton at the Creek Bridge.
The closure of the Grain Refinery led to the redundancy of John Cotton and many others. So since November 1981 George has soldiered on alone.
His duties in the part-time post have included looking after the gates, maintainin the 106-year-old bridge lifting mechanism and punt house, swinging the bridge, recording arrivals and tonnages and notifying local wharf-owners of arrivals.
He has kept a close eye on the creek, noticing any problems and ensuring that the waterway was always kept clear.
"A little bit of me will die when I leave here," George admits. "I've always felt a special affection forf the Creek and the Brents. But now I want to devote more time to my wife who has been very patient with me over the years.""
A photograph appears with the article.

George Hilton Kennett first married Eleanor Lawrence at the Parish Church of St. Mary Magdelene in the City of London on 16 October 1866. this wedding was four days after his sister, Charlotte's, wedding. Eleanor's father was an umbrella manufacturer. George was living at 15 Little Knight Rider Street at the time and working as a clerk. John Kennett witnessed the wedding. Eleanor must have died within two or three years of the marriage. In 1867 the family were living at 25 Foley Street, Marylebone, London.
In 1872 on a daughter's birth certificate, George was married to Elizabeth Margaret Kerr, not to Eleanor. The family were living at 1 Roberts Place, Newington. George was a commercial clerk. Elizabeth was born at Poole, Dorset.
In 1881 the couple were living at Thatched Cottage, Westbury on Trym, Gloucester. Elizabeth was 29 years old. George was working as a dock labourer according to the census but I understand that he could still have actually been a clerk checking goods, et cetera.
In 1891 Elizabeth, recorded as Margaret on the census, was a widow and working as a milliner and dressmaker. | KENNETT, George Hilton (I4761)

George married Caroline Dodd, who was his first cousin through the family of his grandmother, Judith Dodd. Together, they had ten children: George William, born 1857, later to become a mariner; Edward born 1859, also later to become a mariner; Emily Elizabeth who worked as a kitchen maid; Mary Christina who eventually went out to work as a servant; John Charles, a general labourer; Charles and Walter Lynch, the twins in the family; Ernest, Alfred and William. William died a few days before his second birthday.
By 1871 George, Caroline and family were living at the Brents. All children, except Charles and Walter Lynch, were still then attending school.
In 1881 Emily Elizabeth was working as a kitchen maid on Tyndale House farm, which at that time was owned by William Miller. I can imagine that her work was demanding as, in addition to the family, there were also 13 other men, 3 other women and 4 boys employed on the farm. The remaining members of George and Caroline's family were living on the Brents. The two oldest sons, George William and Edward, were working as mariners and John Charles, at age 14 had gone to work as a general labourer. Mary Christina was living and working at Albion Terrace as a domestic servant for Thomas Attwater, the Harbour Master at Faversham.
George, Sr. owned a ship called the 'George William'. He was a freeman and a dredger as had been his ancestors before him. Many of the Gregory ships were built at Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey.
Both George and Caroline died sometime after 1881, George having died first but both were buried in Preston-next-Faversham churchyard. After George's death, Edward had to pitch in and help his mother look after the family. Caroline took in sewing and whatever else she could do to support the family but continued to raise her children to be hard-working and God-fearing. In recent years, all of the tombstones were moved against the churchyard walls so that the grounds could be groomed more easily. Apparently, Edward's daughter, Winifred, used to read the tombstones frequently as a little girl and wondered what her ancestors were like. Nearly all of the Gregory line had blue or grey eyes with fair or red hair.
Winifred also remembered that all of her family talked very softly. Caroline Dodd's parents had been reasonably well off and owned quite a large farm. They, however, fell on hard times when a sea wall broke and flooded their farm with salt water. Later, a hired hand was swallowed with animals and implements when a large crater-like opening in the ground suddenly and violently appeared. The family lost many of their farm animals during that tragic event. | GREGORY, George (I2241)

George married Caroline while he was still a minor at Gillingham Parish Church on 10 Mar 1845. Caroline was the daughter of another victualler. No Kennett witnessed this wedding. George said he was a Clerk, living in Farnborough, Kent. In 1848 George was the Superintendent of a station, presumably Farnborough. Caroline and George lived in Passage West, County Cork, a town just outside of Cork, for two or three years but were back in England, living at 7 Edwin Place, Park Road, Peckham, in 1858. George was "lately a Traffic Manager on a Railway". Caroline died on 13 July 1859 as a result of falling down stairs after being taken ill suddenly. There was an inquest held on 14 July by the Coroner for Surrey.
In 1867 George was living at Adisham, Kent and was the station master. He had a young wife, Elizabeth (nee Saddler) who born circa 1838. In 1881, on the 1881 British Census Index, George and his family were misrecorded under the surname Bennett. The family was living at Sole Street, Railway Station House, Cobham, Surrey. All of Caroline's children had left home by then. George's second wife, Elizabeth, must have died as George was by then married to Sarah Ann, who was born circa 1837 in Chartham, Kent. Maude Annie Peagram, his great niece (Edith Agnes's stepdaughter) aged 2 was staying with them. | KENNETT, George (I2750)

George, the eldest son of Thomas Milsted and Ann (nee Gregory), had a very short life, dying a little past his first wedding anniversary. He did, however, manage to father one child before his untimely end: Georgina, born during 1856.
By 1871 George's wife, Emily, had remarried a man by the name of John Pepper, a labourer at the local cement works. By him she had an additional four children. Despite Georgina never having known her father, she must have be raised with his memory ever present as unlike other children of that time Georgina was always recorded with her correct birth surname - that of Milsted, on census and other contemporary records. | MILSTED, George (I2616)

Gertrude of Saxony (c. 1030 – August 4, 1113), also known as Gertrude Billung, was a countess of Holland by marriage to Floris I, Count of Holland, and countess of Flanders by marriage to Robert I, Count of Flanders. She was regent of Holland in 1061-1067 during the minority of her son Dirk V, and regent of Flanders during the absence of her spouse in 1086-1093.
Biography
She was the daughter of Bernard II, Duke of Saxony[1] and Eilika of Schweinfurt.
Countess of Holland
In c. 1050, she married Floris I, Count of Holland (c. 1017 – June 28, 1061).[2] Upon the death of her spouse in 1061, her son Dirk V became Count of Holland.[2] Since he was a minor, she became regent.
When Dirk V came into power, William I, Bishop of Utrecht, took advantage of the situation, occupying territory that he had claimed in Holland. Gertrude and her son withdrew to the islands of Frisia (Zeeland), leaving William to occupy the disputed lands.
Countess of Flanders
In 1063 Gertrude married Robert of Flanders (Robert the Frisian),[3] the second son of Baldwin V of Flanders. This act gave Dirk the Imperial Flanders as an appanage – including the islands of Frisia west of the Frisian Scheldt.
She and her husband then acted as co-regents of Holland for her son during his minority.
When her spouse left for a journey to Jerusalem in 1086-1093, Gertrude served as regent of Flanders during his absence.
Family and children
She had a total of seven children with Floris I, Count of Holland:
Albert (b. c. 1051), a canon in Liege.
Dirk V (c. 1052, Vlaardingen–17 June 1091).
Peter (b. c. 1053), a canon in Liége.
Bertha (c. 1055–1094, Montreuil-sur-Mer), who married Philip I of France in 1072.[2]
Floris (b. c. 1055), a canon in Liége.
Matilda (b. c. 1057)
Adela (b. c. 1061), who married Count Baudouin I of Guînes.
From her second marriage to Robert of Flanders she had five children:
Robert II of Flanders (c. 1065 – October 5, 1111).[3]
Adela (d. 1115), who first married king Canute IV of Denmark,[3] and was the mother of Charles the Good, later count of Flanders. She then married Roger Borsa, duke of Apulia.
Gertrude, who married Theodoric II, Duke of Lorraine,[3] and was the mother of Thierry of Alsace, also later count of Flanders.
Philip of Loo, whose illegitimate son William of Ypres was also a claimant to the county of Flanders.
Ogiva, abbess of Messines.
