According to a grandson of William Henry Metters, he fought in the U.S. Civil War as a blockade runner.

Hello Susan,
Many thanks for your prompt reply. We share the same great grandparents as you note, only Tristam Bickle and Susanna Doble are only my third great grandparents. This is because my grandfather, Henry William Metters, John Bickle Metters' son, was in his sixties when my father was born and my father, in turn, was in his forties when I was born. Incidentally, Henry William allows me to boast about having a grandfather who fought in the U.S. Civil War - mainly as a blockade runner. Americans tend to raise their eyebrows in disbelief!

John Bickle Metters has been rather illusive for me. I only tracked his later life recently. He left Devon in his forties and raised most of his family in Jersey.

It's strange that I received your e mail just as I was about to view the 1851 Census in connection with Richard Hill. You will know that his mother was Mary Bickle and his father John Hill.

My interest here is, of course, connected with Charlotte Metters, sister of John Bickle Metters, who married Richard Hill in Sept. 1832.

I realise that your web site would not be really concerned with the Metters extension and that the interest shown in Charlotte and John Bickle Metters is on account of the Bickle connection, but please keep in contact if you think something will interest me.

One last point of interest. John Bickle Metters is the only one of William Metters's children to adopt the name Bickle. I wonder if there is a tradition here relating to the eldest son?
Best Wishes,
Ray

Hello Ray,
Thank you for visiting the website and your kind comments. Yes, the link, below, will open a "Suggested Changes" page on the website. This "Suggested Changes" page should be used for short amendments or additions. If, on the other hand, you have a descendancy chart or more extensive information that you would like to see included on the website, then please write to me at
gneagnie@vaxxine.com
Are you a descendant of John Bickle Metters? I ask this question as his maternal grandparents, Tristram Bickle and Susanna Doble, were my 5th great-grandparents. I descend through their daughter, Mary, who married John Hill in 1790 and through their son, Tristram Hill, their grandson, Tristram Hill and their great-grandson, John James Harris Hill. My grandfather was Victor John Hill.
I look forward to hearing from you again and receiving the updated information concerning John Bickle Metters.
Best wishes,
Susan D. Young

Comments: This is a most useful website. I wish to update some of the facts on 1866 William Metters, especially the section on his son John Bickle Metters. Is there an e mail address I can use? Regards, Ray Metters R. Metters raymetters@eircom.net
