John Medhurst, 18, was indicted for embezzling various small sums, the property of Francis Hills of Maidstone. George Dampier stated that he was a shopkeeper in Pudding Lane. The prisoner was employed by Mr. Hills, a baker. Harriet Dampier wife of the last paid 4s to the prisoner on account of Mr. Hills on the 16th of February. Fanny Hyland proved that on the 18th of March she paid her bread account 1s 6d to the prisoner for Mr. Hills. Elizabeth Anderson proved that on the 8th and 9th of February she paid him half a crown on the same account. Mr. F. Hills baker, deposed that he had employed the prisoner to assist him in baking and carrying out bread. He was entrusted to take, and being home the money. He usually took out a certain quantity of bread and when he came home entered in a book the amount of money that he had received, and also the bread that had been left on credit. On the 16th of February he only paid 3s instead of the 4s he had received on Mrs. Dampier's account. The witness then proved that several other entries were incorrect, the prisoner having received in them more than he accounted for. The prisoner put in a written defence, but the Charman having read it advised him to consider well before he had it read, as, if he did, it would be necessary that he should make some enquiry. The prisoner then withdrew it. The prisoner's father then wished to speak on his behalf and the prisoner called him as a witness. When in the box however, he had no question to ask him. Verdict - guilty. The court then sentenced him to be imprisoned and kep to hard labor for 4 calendar months.
