IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN, the third day of October in the thirtieth year of the reign of our sovereign Lady Elizabeth [1588] by the grace of God of England, France and Ireland Queen, Defender of the faith, etc, I, JOHN LANE, of the parish of Lenham, in the County of Kent, being sick of body but of perfect memory thanks be to God, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following,
First, I bequeath my soul into the hands of almighty God hoping to be saved and all my sins pardoned through my Lord and only saviour Jesus Christ, etc
Item, first I will that there be bestowed the bread of one bushell of wheat upon the poor of the parish of Lenham that have most need.
Item, I give and bequeath unto my five daughters MARIE, SUZANNA, MARGARET and SARA and ELIZABETH 20 shillings a piece to be paid to them at the age of 21 year and if any of them happen to die before the said age my will is the ones shall be each others
Item, also I give unto each of them one ewe a piece with a lamb by their side to be delivered unto teir uses the next spring after my decease by my Executrix
The rest of all my goods and chattels my debts and legacies before willed being discharged and paid I give unto JUDITH my wife upon this condition tht she shall discharge and pay my debts and legacies and bring up my children in good and honest sort with meat, drink and all other necessaries whom I make and ordain my sole Executrix of this my Will.
THE LAST WILL of me JOHN LANE of Lenham for the disposing of my house wherein I dwell situate in the town of Lenham in the County of Kent.
Item, I will that JUDITH my wife shall have the whole profits of my said house during her natural life upon this condition that she shall keep the reparations and pay the Lord's rents and after the decease of JUDITH my wife I give and bequeath my said house unto JAMES LANE my son and to his heirs forever. Provided always and excepted that when KATHERINE GREENLAND shall appear to die and that JUDITH my wife shall not be able to pay unto THOMAS GREENLAND AND DANIEL GREENLAND and the daughters of the foresaid KATHERINE GREENLAND the sum of 28 pounds when it ought to be paid that then I will that my said house shall be sold for the best and most price that may be my Mr. James Parkhurst, Gent, with the consent of JUDITH my wife and my said house so sold by the said James Parkhurst and the most price had, I will that he shall pay and discharge the foresaid sum of 28 pounds and the rest of the money over and above the sum of 28 pounds I will shall be equally divided the one half to JUDITH my wife and the other half I will that the said James Parkhurst, Gent shall keep and pay the same part or portion unto JAMES my son when he shall come to the age of 21 yars if it happen to be sold before the said age And I do commit my whole trust in him for the profits thereof to be paid unto my wife or my son JAMES at his discretion, to take such order therein as shall be best for their security; And if my son JAMES happen to die without hries and the house there sold, then I will that his part and portion of the sum shall be indifferently divided amongst my five daughters and either of them to be each others heir
