- At the time of the 1881 census, Marie was staying with her aunt Rebecca Freeman (nee Gregory) in Rolvenden. In that her own mother had just had a newborn baby during March of 1881, it may be that it was necessary for her family to relieve some of the burden of all her children and had offered to take Marie. Marie was the second oldest child and the logical choice to send away for a short holiday. Her oldest sister was probably required to help look after her younger siblings: George 7, Alice 6, Fred 4 and Kathleen 2.
