IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, the year of our Lord God one thousand, five hundred and nine the 2nd day of May, I, WILLIAM CARTER, of the parish of Crundale, in the County of Kent, with a whole and perfect mind make my testament in the manner following,
First, I bequeath my soul to almighty God, to our blessed lady virgin and to the holy saints of heaven, my body to be buried in the churchyard of our blessed lady in Crundale before said.
Item, I bequeath to the high [alter] for my soul for my tithes negligently forgotten 3 shillings 4 pence.
Item, to holy cross light 12 pence.
Item, to our lady light there in the body of the church 12 pence.
Item, to the trinity light 6 pence.
Item, to the light of Saint John there 8 pence.
Item, to the light of Saint James there 4 pence.
Item, I bequeath to the reparations of the steeple of the said church of Crundale 3 shillings 4 pence.
Item, I will that an honest priest shall sing in the said church of Crundale by the space of a whole year for my soul and my friends’ souls and that my Executors pay to him for his stipendy and labour 10 marks.
Item, I will that there be sung in the foresaid church for my soul at my forthfare 10 masses, at my month’s day 10 masses, and at my 12 month’s mind 10 masses.
Item, I will that during the space of 50 years next after my decease my Executors and their assigns shall distribute among poor people of the foresaid parish yearly 2 bushels of wheat baked bread and 2 bushels of malt brewed to ale.
Item, I bequeath to THOMAS HALLE 50 sheep.
Item, I bequeath to each of my godchildren a bushel of barley if it be asked.
Item, I will and ordain that ALICE, my wife, and THOMAS HALLE, foresaid, be mine Executors to dispose and fulfill this my last Will and Testament.
THIS IS THE LAST WILL of me the foresaid, WILLIAM CARTER, made the day and year above said rehearsed unto WILLIAM BLECHYNDEN of Mersham, Gentleman, HARRY ALLARD, RICHARD MOUNTE, ROBERT FROGNALL, RICHARD BULLYNG and JOHN PILCHER, my feoffes.
First, I will that my said feoffes shall suffer ALICE, my wife, to have parecive? And receive the whole profits of all my lands and tenements in he parish of Crundale foresaid and Godmersham or elsewhere within the shire of Kent unto the time that NICHOLAS my son come to the age of 24 years and then I will that my wife, if she be then living, shall have her dowry as it plainly appeareth in a deed to her thereof made in time of marriage and besides that dowry I will that NICHOLAS, my son, shall pay unto her during her life, yearly, 6 shilling 8 pence and when my son NICHOLAS cometh to the said age of 24 years I will that he shall have all my said lands and tenements to him, his heirs or assigns forever except an acre and an half of med land called Breggemede lying at Godmersham Bregge the which I will, if need be to fulfill my Will or defend any action tallying upon my Executor, that it be sold by my said Executors.
Item, I will that the said NICHOLAS, my son, when he cometh to the foresaid age of 24 years that he pay unto his brother, GEORGE, 40 marks in form following, that is to say, yearly 26 shillings 8 pence unto the time the said 40 marks be fully contented and paid and if it fortune that ALICE, my wife, die or my son, NICHOLAS, hath paid unto his brother, GEORGE, the said sum of 40 marks in manner and form beforesaid, then I will that after the decease of the said ALICE that the same NICHOLAS shall pay unto his brother, GEORGE, 40 shillings yearly till the said 40 marks be fully content and paid and if it fortune the said NICHOLAS, my son, to die without issue of his body lawfully begotten or he come to the said age of 24 years as is before rehearsed then I will that GEORGE, my son, shall have when he cometh to the said age of 24 years all my foresaid lands and tenements except before excepted to him, his heirs and assigns forever paying yearly to his mother, if she be then living, besides her dowry, beforesaid, 6 shillings 8 pence in the manner as NICHOLAS, my son, shall have done and also paying to his brother, JOHN, if he be then living 20 marks in this manner following, that is to say, yearly 26 shillings 8 pence till the said sum of 20 marks be fully contented and paid and if it fortune that ALICE, my wife, to die or the said 20 marks be paid in manner beforesaid, then I will that the said GEORGE, my son, shall pay yearly to his brother JOHN, 40 shillings till the foresaid 20 marks be fully content and paid and if it fortune that GEORGE, my son, die without issue of his body lawfully begotten or he come to the full age of 24 years, then I will that JOHN, my son, shall have all my foresaid lands and tenements with the appurtenances except before except to him, his heirs and assigns forever paying yearly to his mother, if she be then living, yearly besides her dowry 6 shillings 8 pence so that the foresaid JOHN, my son, shall not enter my said lands and tenements his mother being alive unto the time that the said GEORGE my son should have come to the full age of 24 years as is before rehearsed.
Item, I will that the said ALICE, my wife, as long time as she is sole and unmarried shall have two chambers at the head of the hall of my messuage under the loft of the said hall also fire and fleece with free going and coming to the kitchen to brew and bake and other things necessary, pasture for 20 sheep winter and summer and keeping of a cow winter and summer.
Item, I will that when any of my foresaid sons cometh to their lands according to this my last Will that then mine Executors or their assigns shall deliver to my foresaid sons coming to his lands 50 quarters of barley, 20 quarters of wheat, 8 horses, 10 mares with their harness, cart and plough and harrows with the apparel, 4 kene, 12 hogs and 12 liweware?.
Item, I will that all mine in stuff of household shall be divided in three parts by even portions the first to my wife, the second to my son NICHOLAS and the third to my son GEORGE and if any of them die or they come to the full age of 24 years then I will that these bequests be equally divided by even portions to the longest lives of all my said sons.
Item, I will that the foresaid ALICE, my wife, have a 100 sheep and with profit coming of them she shall send my son JOHN to school and when my son JOHN cometh to the age of 24 years then I will that he shall have the said 100 sheep to his own proper use provided always I will that if it fortune that all my sons die without issue of their bodies lawfully begotten the which God forbid that then all my said lands and tenements with appurtenances shall remain unto the heir male of THOMAS HALL and AGNES, his wife, to have to him, his heirs and assigns forever in fee and if there be none heir male living of the bodies of the said THOMAS HALLE and AGNES, his wife, lawfully begotten, then I will that all my foresaid lands and tenements with appurtenances be sold the best wise that it can be by mine Executors and feoffes and of the money thereof receiving I will that the said THOMAS HALLE shall have 20 pounds and the residue thereof to be disposed for my soul, my friends’ souls and all custen? souls after the discretion of mine Executors this bearing witness Sire Richard, curate of the said parish, Richard Carter, Thomas Pilcher and other persons.
PROBATUM fuit suprascriptum testamentum 21 die mensis Julii anno domini millimo guingentesimo 9 ac approbatum et commissa quo fuit adminstracio ominum et singlores bonores per executoribus in dicto testamento nominates puntus in forma juris iurates.
APPROVED was the above-named testament on 21 day month of July in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred fifty nine and entrusted administration of all and singular the goods to the Executor named in the said Will in the form of the law.
