Bircholt

Bircholt is, ecclesiastically, in the diocese of Canterbury, in the archdeaconry of Canterbury but there is no church or rectory.

Bircholt, or Birchall, a parish and a franchise in Kent, in the poor law union of East Ashford, and electorally in the Eastern division of Kent.  The parish is in East Ashford district, and lies 2-1/2 miles north of Smeeth rail station, and 4-1/2 miles east-by-south of Ashford.  Post town, Smeeth, under Ashford.  Acres, 298.  Real property in 1860, £470.  Population in 1861, 30.  Houses, 76.  The property is divided between two.

The living is a rectory in the diocese of Canterbury.  Value, £50.Patron, E. Knatchbull Hugessen, Esq..

The franchise, called also a barony, is in the lathe of Shepway;  and contains four parishes and part of another.  Acres, 10,482.  Population 2,271.  Houses, 461. ¹

The Ancient parish of St Margaret Bircholt had a mediaeval church, which was ruined in the 16th-century. Edward Hasted in his 1799, History and Topographical Survey of the County of Kent, indicates that the parish was very small and associated with the manor house. Hasted also records that the church had been abandoned and ruined by 1578. ²
