Northbourne is, ecclesiastically, in the diocese of Canterbury, in the archdeaconry of Canterbury and in the deanery of Sandwich. The church is named for St. Augustine with registers commencing 1586. Northbourne is a village and a parish in Eastry district, Kent. The village stands 2-3/4 miles west-by-south of Deal rail station; takes its name from a brook or burn which runs to the Stour at Sandwich; and has a post office under Deal. The parish contains also the hamlets of Finglesham, Little Betshanger, Marley and West Street; and includes the detached tract of Tickenhurst. Acres, 3,628. Rated property in 1859, £6,870. Population, 890. Houses, 193. The property is subdivided. The manor was given, in 618, by King Eadbald, to the monastery of St. Augustine at Canterbury; went, after the dissolution, to the Crown; and belongs now to Sir W. C. James, Bart.. Northbourne Court, was a residence of the monks; is supposed to occupy the site of a palace of King Eadbald; was, for some time, in the possession of the Sandys family; had then famous hanging gardens, parts of which are still preserved; and is now a ruin. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Canterbury. Value, £360 with a habitable glebe house. Patron, the Archbishop of Canterbury. The church is Norman, transition, and early English - large, cruciform, and interesting; has a massive central tower; and contains a triangular-headed piscina, and a splendid monument to Sir Edwin Sandys of 1629.
