Plumstead, Pigot's 1840 Directory

Transcribed by and posted with kind permission of Richard Mason.
See also Pigots 1840 Woolwich Directory.

One mile east of Woolwich, in the hundred of Lessness, is Plumstead parish and village, pleasantly situated at a short distance from the banks of the river;  it contains a neat church dedicated to St.  Nicholas, and an endowed school;  the living is a vicarage, in the patronage of the family of BOWELL.   Plumstead by charter possesses the privilege of holding a market and fairs the right however has not for ages been exercised.

Shooter's Hill in this parish, is chiefly to be noted as the residence of many respectable families, and the summer retreat of many opulent individuals, attracted by the salubrity of the situation and the extensive views which it commands over a wide district of the country.  The most striking erection in this neighbourhood is a tower, built on a commanding site, to commemorate the capture of the fortress of Seven Droog in the East Indies, by the British troops under Sir William JAMES.  The population of the parish in 1831, was 2,745.
